Since graduation, he has played a key role in forging strategic alliances with the tourism, lifestyle, and technology sectors, which has led to meaningful contributions to Singapore’s tourism development.

We catch up with both scholars to learn about their exciting journeys and their contributions within STB.

What sparked your interest in applying for the STB Scholarship?

Shann: I was searching for mid-term scholarships within the government sector and chanced upon the STB Mid-Term Scholarship! After looking into the work STB does—and with some background knowledge of how interconnected tourism and geography are, I decided to apply for STB’s internship programme. The internship in STB’s Technology Transformation Group solidified my passion for the industry and company. That experience played a big role in my decision to apply for the STB Mid-Term Scholarship.

Sean: Joining STB strongly aligned with my interests at the intersection of international business, tourism, and economic development, in a field that centres strongly on people. STB offers a unique opportunity to view tourism through both a macro and micro lens. You get to shape the tourism ecosystem by taking on an industry development role while also honing business and market development skills in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

How has the scholarship helped you grow both personally and professionally?

Shann: The scholarship provided me with the opportunity to study abroad for my master’s. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in a new city and culture, broadening my worldview.

Personally, it has helped me grow more adaptable and open-minded. Professionally, the exposure to different markets has enhanced my understanding of tourism and its nuances. Visiting other countries has deepened my perspective, enabling me to recognise various market offerings and trends that can inform my work in the industry.

Sean: Studying in America and Europe enabled me to relate to others seemingly different from me. It gave me an opportunity to understand their psyche and form deep genuine friendships from across the world, for which I remain especially grateful.

Professionally, my roles at STB have allowed me to pursue my passion for business and economic development through the lens of tourism. I’m convinced that our work is critical in shaping Singapore as an authentic, global destination for visitors, one that Singaporeans can be proud of.

That’s inspiring! Tell us an interesting aspect of your current role.

Shann: People might not realise how varied my role can be. Beyond the usual meetings and planning, I get to work with a wide range of stakeholders—from internal teams to external partners like tourist guides and other agencies. It is not just about executing tasks but also about building relationships and anticipating trends to shape tourism offerings. The mix of strategy, collaboration and problem-solving keeps things dynamic, which makes every day a little different.

Sean: Now, based in New York, I’m charged with spearheading STB’s Investment Promotion efforts in America driving global tourism concepts and investments that can grow and innovate from Singapore. Starting this function from scratch has been a particularly rewarding experience, as I get to put Singapore on the global map in a whole new way. I’m grateful that STB empowers officers like me to take ownership and navigate major accounts at all levels.

Sean, what’s the work culture like at STB?

I’ve consistently received support from my bosses and peers, some of whom have become close friends and supported me in both my personal and professional pursuits, for which I’m deeply grateful.

What opportunities for exposure does STB offer, Shann?

STB offers a unique Management Associate Programme that allows recent graduates to rotate to two different departments during their first year. This rotation provides exposure to various sectors within Singapore’s tourism ecosystem, including hotels, MICE, hospitality, tours, and cruises. The diversity of work means there’s always something new to explore! Beyond the programme, STB is open for staff to switch departments every two to three years, which promotes continuous learning, skill development, and career growth across different roles and workstreams.

Any insights to dispense to our readers keen on joining STB?

Shann: Stay curious and open to new experiences! Tourism is a dynamic field that thrives on creativity, adaptability and understanding different markets. A broad knowledge of various markets and trends will help you in this field. Travel whenever possible and engage with people from diverse backgrounds. Also, don’t be afraid to explore different roles within the industry—whether in hospitality, events, or marketing—because every experience adds value and shapes your perspective.

Sean: I’d encourage them to be true to themselves and to pursue a career that resonates with their values and aspirations.
