ME4A Dextor Goh is a Command, Control, Communications and Computer Expert (C4X) with the DIS. He is a recipient of the SAF Merit Scholarship and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Computing in Information Security at NUS.
In a world where technology is evolving at lightning speed, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals has never been greater. Among those rising to the challenge is ME4A Dextor Goh, who is a Command, Control, Communications and Computer Expert (C4X) by vocation with the Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS) of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). As a C4X in the cyber track, Dextor specialises in areas such as security monitoring, cyber incident response, vulnerability assessment and more—defending against aggressors who seek to undermine Singapore’s digital security.
Dextor is also pursuing a Bachelor of Computing in Information Security at the National University of Singapore (NUS), setting the stage for him to make a real impact at DIS.
We caught up with Dextor to learn more about what drives him and his ambitions for the future.
What inspired you to get into cybersecurity, and why did you decide to go with the DIS?
My introduction to cybersecurity came from one of my seniors in secondary school and that sparked my decision to pursue a Cybersecurity diploma in polytechnic. It was during my time there that my passion for the field truly took off. This passion eventually led me to pursue a career with the DIS, where I can dive deep into what I love while working on cool projects that you can only experience in the DIS.
What motivated you to apply for the SAF Merit Scholarship?
I believe that many people in the tech industry embody adaptability and efficiency at their core. It’s this spirit of constantly adapting and striving to improve that motivated me to apply for the SAF Merit Scholarship. I told myself that if I were awarded the scholarship, I would use the opportunities it provides to make a positive impact and do my best for everyone.
What are some valuable takeaways from your studies that you believe will benefit your future work?
One of the biggest lessons I've learned in my studies so far is how to embrace setbacks. Things won’t always go as planned—our exam results may not meet expectations, but it’s important to ask ourselves the right questions so we can improve. What went wrong? Did I focus on the right aspects of the course? Was I just having an off day? If we don't dwell on our setbacks, we can always bounce back stronger and conquer new challenges.
What’s been the best part of being a C4X Apprentice?
As an apprentice, our main role is to be like sponges—absorbing as much knowledge and experience as we can! We spend time at different universities, honing both our technical and soft skills. During vacation breaks, we're given the opportunity to return to the DIS and be attached to one of its units. This hands-on experience allows us to witness firsthand what goes on behind the scenes in defending Singapore’s digital domain.
In my last attachment, I had the chance to join the SAF Cyber Defence School (CDS), where future Cyber Defenders of the SAF are trained. I really enjoyed my time there, interacting with the cadets and learning about their journeys in cybersecurity and with the DIS.
What’s been the most memorable moment for you at the DIS so far?
The most memorable moment for me was when my batchmates and I completed our MDEC Phase I training and participated in the Appointment Certificate Presentation Ceremony. Seeing the pride on everyone’s parents’ faces and the joy among my friends made all the hard work and effort feel worth it. This is the peace and joy I strive to protect.
How has the DIS helped you grow, both personally and professionally?
The DIS has provided me with countless opportunities to hone both my technical cyber skills and soft skills, such as effective communication and leadership. We also have regular chances to pursue industry-recognised certifications. I’m excited to apply the skills and concepts I’ve learnt in school to my work when I return to service.
Finally, what do you hope to accomplish during your tenure at the DIS?
I simply wish to make a difference and positively impact the lives of those around me.
