Lee Wen Cong is a Respiratory Therapist at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He is a recipient of the Healthcare Merit Award and holds a Bachelor of Health Science in Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, specialising in Respiratory Therapy.
For Respiratory Therapist Lee Wen Cong, breathing is more than just a vital function—it’s been a lifelong focus. Having grown up with asthma, he experienced firsthand how fragile life can feel when every breath is a struggle.
“The sense of breathlessness I experienced was dreadful,” he recalled. “I wish nobody would have to experience what I felt.”
This personal challenge ignited his passion for respiratory therapy, a field where he now helps others with breathing difficulties. Wen Cong’s journey was made possible through the Healthcare Merit Award offered by MOH Holdings (MOHH). The scholarship enabled him to pursue a Bachelor of Health Science in Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, specialising in Respiratory Therapy, at the University of Missouri. Beyond the financial support, the scholarship offered him valuable growth opportunities, including personal development courses and engagement sessions that expanded his professional horizons. The comprehensive support allowed him to excel in his education and personal development.
During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wen Cong was still completing his studies in the US while actively working in hospitals. “Some of the hospitals I worked at were overwhelmed,” he recalled. “I remember hectic days where my preceptors and I could only squeeze in a 15-minute lunch before attending to 15–20 patients again.” Despite the challenges, he embraced each day as an opportunity to grow. “Looking back, those busy days tremendously improved my time management skills,” he said.
His time at the University of Missouri helped him build a solid foundation for a career in respiratory care. “I have also acquired invaluable soft skills such as time management, communication, and cultural competency,” Wen Cong shared. “These are necessary skills when working in a fast-paced environment and communicating with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.”

Finding His Niche in Neonatal Care
Today, as a Respiratory Therapist at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Wen Cong plays a crucial role in supporting patients across the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Children’s Intensive Care Unit (CICU), high dependency ward, and general wards.
Reflecting on his initial experience in the NICU, Wen Cong admitted, “I was initially apprehensive about caring for premature babies as they are so tiny!” However, with the guidance of a supportive mentor, he quickly adapted. “During my neonatal intensive care clinical rotation, I was very fortunate to be attached to a preceptor who was very passionate and excellent at nurturing students,” he added.
This experience proved transformative, as it introduced him to the unique challenges of neonatal and paediatric care and helped him discover his true calling in respiratory therapy.
Wen Cong’s daily responsibilities include conducting chart reviews, optimising ventilator settings and assessing patients’ readiness for ventilator weaning. Yet, no two days are the same, with new challenges and tasks emerging constantly. At times, he supports patient transport between hospitals, assists in bronchoscopies, or responds to emergencies where he helps doctors insert breathing tubes.
One memorable moment that left a lasting impression on him occurred when a patient was struggling with discomfort after being put on a new ventilator machine. “After a long series of trial and error, I finally found the sweet spot of optimal ventilator settings that helped the patient breathe comfortably,” Wen Cong explained. “I believe you don’t have to perform something big, such as saving a life, to leave an impact. It’s the little things that matter.”
Beyond problem-solving, Wen Cong works closely with physiotherapists and nurses to mobilise patients both within and outside the ICU.
In addition to direct patient care, Wen Cong contributes to research by collecting and entering data, creating educational materials, and leading teaching sessions. He also mentors respiratory therapy students and actively pursues continuous education to stay ahead in his field.
Despite juggling many responsibilities, Wen Cong finds immense joy and satisfaction in his work. “Other than seeing patients get better until their eventual discharge, I thoroughly enjoy learning new things every day at work! It is amazing how much you can learn from other professions, especially since patients are taken care of by a multidisciplinary team,” he enthused.
Looking ahead, Wen Cong is committed to refining his expertise, particularly in utilising advanced methods and tools to improve patient care. “I strive to master my craft,” he said. “I aspire to conduct educational talks and sessions for respiratory therapists and doctors to elevate my profession to greater heights.”
Pathways to Growth and Opportunity
Wen Cong values the personal and professional growth opportunities at SingHealth, which include management and leadership workshops. He also appreciates the chance to engage in research and contribute to the academic field, all while benefiting from the strong culture of knowledge sharing.
For aspiring scholars, Wen Cong stresses the importance of being clear about their motivations. “Be sure of what you want to do,” he advised. He encouraged prospective applicants to do their research and attend outreach programmes like the MOHH Healthcare Scholarships & Career Fair to connect with other scholars and gain insights into the industry.
Reflecting on his journey, Wen Cong urges students to take bold steps in pursuing their dreams. “You’ll never know until you try. Be courageous and chase your dreams!”
