While many young people grapple with uncertainty about their future careers, Smart Nation Scholars Elsa Lee Ting, Victor Loh Wai Kit, and Jaryl Goh Jun Zhong have a clear vision of their futures.

Though their paths into computer science are uniquely inspired, their shared passion led them to pursue the Smart Nation Scholarship.

Jointly offered by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), Government Technology Agency (GovTech), and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the Smart Nation Scholarship aims to identify and cultivate new talents eager to lead transformative change in Singapore’s digital ecosystem.

Upon completing their undergraduate studies, Elsa, Victor, and Jaryl are set to join CSA, GovTech, and IMDA, respectively. We speak with them to learn more about their passion for computer science and their aspirations for the future.

What sparked your interest in computer science?

Elsa: My interest in computer science began in secondary school after watching ‘The Imitation Game’, which tells the story of Alan Turing and his crucial role in breaking the Enigma code during World War II. His work not only profoundly impacted the war but also laid the foundation for modern computing. Turing’s journey, particularly his use of logic and problem-solving to crack codes, captivated me. It sparked my interest in computers and cryptography, leading me to join a programming workshop in school and later pursue a diploma in cybersecurity and digital forensics to further explore my interests in computer science and protecting digital systems.

Victor: I learnt how to make a basic computer game for a school event in primary school. My interest in computers began from a young age and discovering that I could create interesting things with them motivated me to continue learning more!

Jaryl: I have been drawn to technology since childhood, often serving as the go-to “tech support” for my family. I frequently troubleshot various issues, from connectivity problems to device configurations. These experiences sparked my curiosity about how technology devices worked.

My interest deepened through participation in the Infocomm Club as my co-curricular activity in secondary school. I was exposed to activities from mobile application development to basic algorithmic challenges, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Competing in multiple contests expanded my knowledge and led me to pursue a degree in computer science.

“I hope to contribute to Singapore’s ongoing efforts in fortifying its defences against cyber threat actors who aim to disrupt our daily lives, and in turn, ensure a safer digital future for all.” Elsa Lee Ting

What motivated you to apply for the Smart Nation Scholarship?

Elsa: I resonate deeply with its vision of building a thriving digital future for Singapore through technology. Its goal of creating better and more meaningful lives through innovation aligns with my passion for technology and cybersecurity. However, digital innovation comes with significant risks as cyberattacks can disrupt systems and ultimately harm individuals and society. This motivates me to play a part in safeguarding our nation’s digital infrastructure, ensuring that the systems we trust remain secure and resilient.

In a Smart Nation, where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, it’s crucial to address not just existing but emerging challenges. I hope to contribute to Singapore’s ongoing efforts in fortifying its defences against cyber threat actors who aim to disrupt our daily lives, and in turn, ensure a safer digital future for all.

Victor: I’ve always wanted a career that allows me to serve the community, and the Smart Nation Scholarship aligns perfectly with that goal. In 2020, when COVID-19 hit Singapore, I was inspired by the work that the government tech sector did to combat the pandemic.

What forms of support have you received from the scholarship?

Elsa: The scholarship has not only provided financial assistance but also motivated me to invest in my professional development. With this scholarship, I can pursue relevant certifications that enhance my skills and prepare me for a future career in tech.

Additionally, the scholarship has given me the opportunity to do internships at CSA, which has provided me with invaluable practical experience. I completed my first three-month internship in May 2024, after my first year of university, where I applied my academic knowledge to real-world projects such as tabletop exercises. I got to learn from experienced professionals in the field, which improved my technical and practical understanding of cybersecurity operations.

Overall, the scholarship has empowered me to fully embrace my educational journey and pursue my aspirations with confidence. It has inspired me to excel academically, invest in my personal growth, and contribute meaningfully to the public sector.

Jaryl: The internship opportunities and the scholars’ mentorship programme have equipped me with valuable insights into a career in public service and what I want to pursue at IMDA. These experiences offer effective outlets for seeking advice, as I am exploring which aspects of IMDA’s work resonate with me the most, whether on-the-ground initiatives or behind-the-scenes work like policy development.

Elsa, tell us about your experience interning at CSA.

Elsa: As an intern in CSA’s Joint Operations Readiness Division (JORD), I contributed to various initiatives such as tabletop exercises, one of which was conducted as part of the International Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI). Ransomware attacks are scourges to many countries and Singapore is no exception. The CRI is a United States-led collaboration among almost 70 member countries to foster international partnerships and enhance collective resilience against ransomware attacks. During the 2024 CRI Gathering, I supported the JORD team by managing communications between participants from the various member nations, promptly addressing inquiries, and ensuring that they received timely and accurate information. This experience gave me a chance to learn from global professionals and gain insight into diverse decision-making approaches on ransomware mitigation, including the various regulatory frameworks countries use to respond to ransomware attacks. I also contributed to developing a tabletop exercise software platform, aimed at enhancing CSA’s facilitation of future exercises to improve incident response.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in a Cisco CyberOps Associate workshop, which expanded my technical knowledge in IT infrastructure, security monitoring and network analysis, and strengthened my understanding of cyber operations. I also attended a presentation and speaking skills workshop, where I learned how to deliver professional presentations and communicate my points more effectively.

Victor, how did the scholarship enhance your academic experience?

Victor: The scholarship has allowed me to pursue courses and certifications to build my skills in software engineering and cybersecurity. I am grateful that it enabled me to pursue my undergraduate degree at Cambridge, which broadened my horizons and connected me with like-minded people from all over the world.

I received advice on studying overseas from my mentor at GovTech who also studied abroad. Beyond that, she shared her experience transitioning from studying to working, which helps me to prepare for what is coming after my graduation.

“I would like to be part of the team that deepens Singapore’s technological capabilities, while also driving strategic development and initiatives that will have a positive societal impact in Singapore’s journey to becoming a smarter nation.” Jaryl Goh Jun Zhong

What roles do you aspire to take on at your respective agencies?

Victor: I plan to focus on security-related roles, building on my web development and DevOps experience from past internships and knowledge gained at university. A university course on cybersecurity sparked my interest in the field, highlighting the importance of safeguarding digital assets in an organisation such as GovTech, where products are delivered directly to and directly involve our citizens. I am currently preparing for a cybersecurity certification and feeling motivated!

Jaryl: IMDA plays an essential role in spearheading various tech initiatives and deepening regulatory capabilities, being at the forefront of pushing the boundaries and helping to transform Singapore into a digital economy. To become an architect of Singapore’s Digital Future, I would like to be part of the team that deepens Singapore’s technological capabilities, while also driving strategic development and initiatives that will have a positive societal impact in Singapore’s journey to becoming a smarter nation. I plan to continue honing my tech skills and seeking opportunities that can challenge me to grow both technically and strategically.
