Left: Wong Xueqi is a recipient of the OCBC Local Undergraduate Scholarship. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer Engineering at Nanyang Technological University.
Right: Joel Tan is a Senior Data Analyst at OCBC and a recipient of the OCBC Regional Scholarship. He graduated with First Class Honours from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Data Science & Analytics.
As one of Asia’s leading financial institutions, OCBC is committed to investing in talent and to develop them to their full potential. Through its scholarship programme, the bank aims to attract the brightest minds to help them reach their full potential.
Among the key scholarships offered is the OCBC Regional Scholarship, which provides financial support to students from Singapore, Malaysia, China, Indonesia, or Hong Kong studying at selected universities outside their home country. The OCBC Local Undergraduate Scholarship, on the other hand, is for current undergraduates or first-year students at universities in Singapore. Joel Tan and Wong Xueqi are recipients of the OCBC Regional Scholarship and OCBC Local Undergraduate Scholarship, respectively.
We catch up with both scholars to learn about their academic journeys and their aspirations.
Can you share a little about yourselves and what sparked your interest in this field?
Joel: I’m currently a Senior Data Analyst at OCBC. My passion for data analytics began in high school when I spent my free time predicting outcomes of football and e-sports league matches. I would consider historical performances, recent trends and other statistics to make qualitative yet informed predictions. I decided to study data analytics when I learned how it could be leveraged across domains. Even my favourite football team Liverpool gained recognition for its data-driven analytical approach to formulating strategies. I realised that I really belonged in this field that empowers organisations to make data-driven decisions!
Xueqi: I’m currently studying computer engineering at Nanyang Technological University. I have always been interested in science and engineering. Part of it stemmed from my curiosity. From a young age, I enjoyed taking things apart and reassembling them to figure out how they worked. I also hope to make a positive impact in the community with the help of technology.
Why did you decide to apply for the OCBC Scholarship?
Joel: My primary motivation for applying for the OCBC Regional Scholarship was to ease the financial burden on my parents who have been supporting my university education. As a Malaysian, I deeply appreciate the sacrifices they have made for me to further my studies in Singapore. This scholarship gave me the chance to alleviate some of the strain while pursuing my academic ambitions.
It also offered me a starting position in my home country as part of the bond, which I am extremely grateful for, given that I was able to secure a job during the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s a testament to OCBC’s commitment to supporting my professional development.
Xueqi: The scholarship grants me the freedom to pursue my interests with less financial worries. My family, as caregivers for other family members, has faced several financial stressors recently, and I did not want to add to it. With the scholarship, I can focus on my studies and pursue my interest in computer engineering without having to worry about part-time jobs or student loans.
Additionally, the scholarship offers a guaranteed internship, which has given me certainty of the future. The internship will allow me to make a better sense of my career path as it exposes me to the banking sector and provides me with mentorship, enabling me to hone my skills under the guidance of more experienced senior colleagues. The scholarship is also bond-free, which offers me the flexibility to pursue other specialisations, given how the technology industry is constantly evolving.
Joel, what’s one project you’ve enjoyed working on at OCBC? Could you give us insight into the work culture?
In my current role in Credit Risk Modelling, I developed a machine learning model to identify higher-risk corporate borrowers leading to a reduction in credit and operating costs.
Through this project, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for how data-driven insights can inform decision-making and drive proactive risk mitigation efforts.
The best part of working at OCBC is its collaborative work culture. Everyone works as a team, communicates openly about their ideas, and is dedicated to solving issues together.
Looking ahead, what are some specific goals or projects you’re excited about pursuing?
Joel: I am excited to take on more leadership roles and responsibilities as I progress in my career. I have a strong passion for mentoring and aspire to serve as an advisor to my juniors, just as my seniors have guided me throughout my career journey.
Xueqi: I aspire to make a tangible, positive impact on the community. Whether it’s pushing the frontiers of technology or improving the user experience of software to address needs within smaller communities, I want to contribute meaningfully.
Finally, what advice do you have for those considering an OCBC scholarship?
Joel: My advice would be to cultivate a genuine passion in the field which you are studying. This enthusiasm will not only shine through in your application but also keep you motivated to excel in both your academic and professional pursuits— whether with OCBC or whichever path you choose later on.
It’s also important to position your technical and soft skills in a way that will complement the bank’s values and goals. This is crucial as it helps you to stand out from some stiff competition for the scholarship.
Xueqi: Go for it! Especially if your values align with OCBC’s. In addition to having a wonderful opportunity to understand yourself better and explore the various options within the bank, you would also have the privilege of meeting a warm and welcoming community.
Honestly, when I applied, I did not expect to receive this scholarship. I just knew that regardless of the outcome, I would have regretted not trying. So don’t be afraid to try!
