One way it brings this to life is through its scholarship programmes, which support students across Asia in pursuing their academic and career goals. Hera received the OCBC Regional Undergraduate Scholarship and will be joining the OCBC Graduate Talent Programme this year, while Chloe was awarded the OCBC Local Undergraduate Scholarship. Though charting their own paths in different fields, they are united by a shared goal: to make meaningful impact and build a brighter future.
We speak with them to learn more about their journeys, ambitions, and how OCBC’s support is helping them lay the groundwork for impactful careers in the banking industry.
Hera, what made you decide to pursue a career in banking with OCBC?
I’ve always wanted to work in a field with real societal impact, and banking fits that perfectly. It supports businesses, promotes financial inclusion, and drives sustainable growth. With my background in data science, I see huge potential to improve decision-making, manage risks, and drive innovation within the industry.
The OCBC Regional Undergraduate Scholarship is ideal because it supports both academic growth and real-world experience across the region. The scholarship helps me broaden my perspective, and the career opportunities prepare me to contribute not just locally, but across Southeast Asia. On a personal level, I feel a strong connection to OCBC’s Asian culture and drive for innovation. The refresh of OCBC’s logo reflects its commitment to honouring its roots while striving to become Asia’s leading financial services partner for a sustainable future. Hastuti Hera Hardiyanti
Could you tell us about your degree programme and how it’s preparing you for a future career at OCBC?
Hera: I’m pursuing a Bachelor’s in Data Science and Analytics at NUS, an interdisciplinary programme that combines mathematics, statistics, and computer science. It covers key areas like machine learning, data visualisation, and optimisation, along with hands-on, industry-driven projects.
Data plays a pivotal role across all banking functions—from risk and compliance to customer experience and strategic planning. The analytical and technical skills I’m acquiring are directly relevant, and the programme’s focus on real-world problem-solving and communication helps me translate data into actionable insights—skills that align well with OCBC’s dynamic environment.
Chloe: I’m studying Business Administration at NUS and plan to pursue a second major in Chinese Studies or Translation. The programme has exposed me to various business modules like organisational behaviour, accounting, and marketing.
Beyond knowledge, I’ve learned the value of soft skills such as adaptability, resourcefulness, and collaboration. Working in diverse teams has taught me to communicate effectively. These skills are essential in the banking industry and beyond.
What notable experiences have you gained as an undergraduate student, Chloe?
I’ve had countless enriching experiences, from conferences to workshops and various programmes, but what I’m looking forward to most is my upcoming three-month summer internship at a startup in Hangzhou, China. I’m excited to immerse myself in the dynamic entrepreneurial scene, learn from the ground up, and hopefully create something bold when I’m back!
Hera, what were your main responsibilities as an OCBC intern, and what are your takeaways from the experience?
As an intern with the Operational Risk Management team in the Global Wholesale Banking Division, I supported risk oversight by visualising key metrics across various risk programmes. I also automated parts of the data manipulation and analytics process to improve reporting efficiency and accuracy.
A key takeaway was gaining insight into the breadth and depth of OCBC’s risk programmes. It showed me how much thought and effort go into managing risk proactively—work that’s often behind the scenes but vital to maintaining trust and stability.
I also learned that data isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially in a large organisation like OCBC. The same dataset can be processed and visualised differently depending on the objective. This taught me the importance of tailoring data storytelling to the audience and purpose.
Chloe, what are your aspirations for your future career?
I hope to do exciting work that leverages my skills to make a meaningful impact, especially in branding or marketing where I can connect authentically with communities. My skills in strategic thinking, communication and business management have allowed me to understand diverse audiences and collaborate effectively. I aim to bring a global perspective to my work, contributing fresh ideas and driving innovation.
