Seeing the World Through an Economic Lens
Prior to studying economics in school, I was exposed to the subject—particularly behavioral economics—through popular books and TED talks like ‘Freakonomics’. What drew me to study it further in junior college (JC) and eventually at the undergraduate level was seeing how economic concepts guide decision-making at all levels. My JC Economics teacher, Mr Koh, was a significant influence—his teaching and mentorship helped me to see economics as a field of social science that could make sense of how people, firms, and economies make decisions.
Choosing a Career With Purpose and Possibilities
I was keen to work in the public sector because I desired a job with a greater purpose beyond my own career ambitions. I was aware of the key role that EDB has played and continues to play in Singapore’s economic growth and security. As EDB engages with global business giants, I saw the scholarship as an opportunity to work in an organisation where I could learn from the best in the public and private sector. Coupled with my interest in pursuing economics as a degree, EDB seemed like a natural fit with both my academic and career interests.
A Head Start Through the EDB Scholarship
The EDB scholarship contributed to my growth by providing me with a valuable opportunity to intern at EDB while I was still studying, offering an insightful glimpse into the agency’s work before I started full-time. During my time as an undergraduate student in London, EDB also connected me and other scholars with its regional directors based there. Through them, I learnt more about EDB’s crucial role in attracting international investments and gained meaningful perspectives on what to expect from working at the organisation.
Driving Growth in the Agri-Food Sector
In my current role, I account manage foreign companies in the future foods, specialty ingredients and agri-commodities subsectors, focusing on building relationships and promoting investment opportunities to support their growth and presence in Singapore. I also contribute to the development of industry strategy in the dynamic future foods sector, working closely in partnership with government agencies like the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to shape the future of our food ecosystem.
The most rewarding aspect of my job truly resonates with my personal passions. I get to work on food, a sector that is incredibly close to my heart as both an enthusiastic home cook and food lover!

Learning Through Diverse Experiences
One project that truly stands out was my involvement in developing Singapore’s aquaculture industry strategy alongside SFA before taking on my current portfolio. It was an enriching experience where, together with colleagues from SFA and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE), we conducted in-depth market analysis and industry engagement. A particular highlight was our joint study trip to Vietnam, where we gained valuable first-hand insights. The ultimate goal was ambitious and exciting: to develop a comprehensive strategy map to establish Singapore as a leading hub for tropical marine aquaculture. This project was especially meaningful to me, as it combined strategic planning with real-world industry engagement to shape the future of our food security.
Advancing Food Security Through Innovation and Collaboration
I am constantly inspired when speaking to and collaborating with companies that are pioneering cutting-edge food technologies. What makes it even more meaningful is knowing that this innovation is necessary to transform our food system to sustainably feed not just Singapore, but the world. It is deeply satisfying to be part of this transformative journey that combines my personal interests with such an important global mission.
Embracing New Opportunities
Looking ahead, I am intrigued by the possibility of exploring one of Singapore’s more established manufacturing sectors, which would offer an interesting contrast to the more nascent, startup-heavy future foods sector I’m currently in.
In terms of career development, what I particularly appreciate is the mentorship of my bosses in EDB, who make time for regular one-on-one conversations where we discuss not just my current work but also explore opportunities for me to take on challenging new projects and roles that can stretch my capabilities. This open dialogue about career development helps me envision different possible paths within the organisation.
