Scholar Spotlight
Editor's Note

When the BrightSparks editorial team first sat down to plan this issue, we brainstormed a range of ideas. But when our designer casually asked, “What really makes a scholar?” the question lingered. It was simple, yet it opened the door to a much deeper conversation.
Because we all know the polished version of a scholar: excellent grades, impressive accomplishments, and a seemingly clear path forward. But the truth is, there’s a lot more behind that scholar title. It’s about the late-night mugging, the second-guessing, and finding a way to move forward even in uncertainty. The journey isn’t always a perfect straight line where everything falls into place after the award. It can be unpredictable. It can be challenging. But it’s also where a lot of growth happens.
Our cover story features Social Service Scholar Darius Leow, whose reflections offer a grounded human perspective on navigating self-doubt, managing pressure, and finding the resilience to persevere. His journey has helped him grow not just as a professional, but also as a person.
We also took a more introspective (and slightly fun) approach by asking scholars what advice they’d give their younger selves in this issue. Their reflections, full of grace and grit, remind us that the scholar’s journey is as much about mindset and heart as it is about achievements.
There’s often no single definition of what makes a scholar. But across these pages, you’ll see common threads: passion, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenges and doubts in pursuit of something meaningful.
Let these stories remind you that clarity doesn’t always come before the journey—sometimes, it comes because of it.
