Ang Liang Sheng and Han Hao
At ST Engineering, innovation drives how real-world challenges are tackled on a global scale. With a network spanning continents and businesses across diverse industries, the Group offers employees the chance to take on meaningful projects, explore new challenges, and make an impact worldwide. For scholars like Ang Liang Sheng and Han Hao, this culture of innovation and global reach has opened doors to exciting opportunities and accelerated their growth as engineers and leaders.
Liang Sheng began as a Component Engineer in Commercial Aerospace in 2017 and quickly took on the challenge of leading the Passenger-to-Freighter programme abroad. She now applies her experience in a strategic role at Group HQ.
Han Hao started as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Systems Engineer, before moving into Technical Manager and Aftermarket Program Manager roles. Currently, he oversees operations as Production Manager for the LEAP-1B Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) line.
Their journeys showcase not only technical expertise but also the curiosity, adaptability, and leadership that define their careers. We spoke with Liang Sheng and Han Hao to learn their stories, lessons, and what drives them.
How did you decide that engineering was the right path?
Liang Sheng: I have always enjoyed subjects like Math and Physics, and was naturally curious about how things work and how systems connect. With technology advancing rapidly, I became fascinated by how electrical and electronic engineering sits at the heart of innovation. That curiosity eventually shaped my decision to pursue electrical and electronic engineering.
Han Hao: There wasn’t one particular moment, but my dad was the biggest influence. Growing up, I watched documentaries with him, and he would add his own facts and speculations, which sparked my curiosity to ask “why” and “how”. He also took apart faulty electronics to fix them, and I would watch him troubleshoot and explain his thought process. Over time, this curiosity, combined with what I learned in school, inspired me to pursue aeronautical engineering for its complexity and global impact.
Why did you choose ST Engineering to kickstart your engineering career, Liang Sheng?
ST Engineering’s diverse portfolio spanning Aerospace, Smart City & Digital Solutions, as well as Defence & Public Security appealed to me. Its global network of subsidiaries and partners offers endless opportunities to learn and grow. Joining ST Engineering lets me develop my skills while contributing to products and services that make a meaningful impact for Singapore and beyond.
How have you made the most of your scholarships to grow your skills and experience?
Liang Sheng: I had the chance to study abroad and learn from professors and students outside Singapore. I also took on internship opportunities at ST Engineering, where I could see how classroom learning applies to real-world projects.
Han Hao: I pursued my degree at Imperial College London while joining summer programmes in the US, which gave me the opportunity to explore areas beyond my core engineering studies. These experiences broadened my perspective, helped me tackle challenges creatively, and shaped how I plan the next steps in my career.
That’s interesting! Han Hao, what is one valuable lesson you’ve learnt during your university studies?
Engineering taught me that there are infinite sides to every solution — there’s no single ‘right’ answer.
During my third-year project designing an aircraft, I modelled wing structures in MATLAB and got slightly different results each time I ran the code — yet all designs met the requirements. That experience taught me that engineering is about exploring multiple valid solutions that achieve the same goal. It has shaped how I work today, recognising that everyone’s unique perspective contributes towards something bigger.
Can you share more about what you do currently?
Liang Sheng: I work at ST Engineering’s headquarters, under the Strategic Planning pillar of the Group Strategy and Sustainability Office. After a few years in a dedicated business area, this role gives me a macro view of the organisation. We support the individual business areas as well as the organisation by developing, framing and supporting the execution of business strategies. We drive value creation, ensuring that we set initiatives and strategies for sustainable success.
Han Hao: As Production Manager at ST Engineering Aerospace Engines, I oversee MRO for the LEAP-1B engine line powering the Boeing 737 MAX. Engines coming in for servicing are stripped, inspected, repaired or replaced, reassembled, and tested. My mornings start with production walks to monitor progress and resolve issues, followed by customer updates, internal meetings, and continuous improvement projects. I also focus on forward planning, studying engine trends and recurring issues to build capacity and offer services few other MROs can match.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Liang Sheng: It would be my overseas stint in the US, where I led the Passenger-to-Freighter conversion programme. It was my first time leading a major project, and seeing an aircraft successfully converted and returned to service was very fulfilling. It was a proud moment for the team and for me personally, knowing the amount of coordination and effort that went into making it happen. It also gave me a sense of pride to tell my friends and family that the next time they receive an e-commerce delivery, it might have been flown on one of the freighters I was involved in converting. That experience really built my confidence to take on bigger challenges later on.
Han Hao: For me, the highlight has been developing AeroHub, ST Engineering’s eCommerce platform. Designed as a customer-facing portal for the CF6 distribution business, it was built with scalability across the organisation in mind. We launched it within six months — a remarkable achievement — and it has since become a cornerstone of our aftermarket operations.
What kinds of opportunities are available for employees at ST Engineering, Han Hao?
ST Engineering offers a wide range of growth opportunities. Whatever role or skillset you want to develop, there are pathways if you seize them. Even non-technical roles often require technical understanding, which strengthens collaboration across functions and with customers. Employees are encouraged to explore different roles to gain a holistic view. With ST Engineering’s diverse portfolio, it’s possible to switch industries entirely. I have friends who started in aerospace and are now in AI, coding, or strategic planning in other divisions — a testament to the company’s flexibility in shaping our career paths.
Finally, what advice would you give to students or aspiring scholars who are considering an engineering career, Liang Sheng?
Be curious and keep learning. Engineering is about problem-solving, but it’s also about understanding people and the bigger picture. Surround yourself with people you can learn from, and focus on improving a little every day.
