Ye Fan and Jessica Low

The SgIS is Singapore’s only multi-industry scholarship offered in partnership with the government. More than financial support, it offers scholars early exposure to Singapore’s strategic sectors, professional development opportunities, and connections through the SgIS Scholars’ Network to support long-term growth.

What does this mean for SgIS scholars? We speak with two SgIS scholars who are at different stages of their journey.

Ye Fan, an undergraduate in business analytics at NUS and Co-Chairperson of the 13th SgIS Executive Committee, is still carving his path, balancing academics with leadership responsibilities. Jessica Low, a Systems Analyst at Toppan Ecquaria, began her journey studying information systems at SMU and continues to build on the skills gained through her scholarship.

First off, what got you interested in your field of study?

Jessica: My interest in information systems was sparked during SMU’s open house, where I learned about the Smart City Management & Technology major. I was immediately drawn to its interdisciplinary curriculum, which blends strong technical foundations with practical applications in business and society. This combination appealed to my diverse interests, offering a way to grow in different academic areas while building a solid technical skillset.

Ye Fan: I’ve always been fascinated by how mathematics, statistics, and computing can provide insights and support data-driven decisions. Business analytics lets me apply my problem-solving and logical reasoning skills to turn raw data into actionable strategies that can make a real impact.

“My experience with the SgIS Scholars’ Network taught me a great deal about teamwork, leadership, and the importance of fostering a sense of community.” Ye Fan

How did you hear about the SgIS, and what made you go for it?

Jessica: I discovered the SgIS while researching undergraduate scholarships. The opportunity to be sponsored by and serve a bond with a private company was a key draw, along with the flexibility to apply across various organisations under the same scholarship.

Ye Fan: I first learned about the SgIS at an NS fair while serving as a Full-time National Serviceman (NSF). I met the SgIS team, who shared about the scholarship and its strong network that connects scholars from leading organisations across diverse industries. That opportunity to access this high-value network inspired me, as I wanted to grow both academically and professionally through meaningful industry exposure.

How has the scholarship made a difference to you?

Jessica: With my education funded and future employment secured by SgIS, I could wholeheartedly explore co-curricular and academic interests beyond just building my CV. This freedom made my university experience thoroughly enjoyable and enriching.

Ye Fan: The scholarship encouraged me to strive for excellence both in my studies and personal development. Beyond financial support, it provides mentorship, networking opportunities, and leadership experiences that built my confidence and maturity. Being part of the SgIS community also reinforces the importance of giving back and supporting fellow scholars.

In what ways has it equipped you to handle real-world career challenges?

Jessica: My degree gave me a strong technical foundation in coding languages and product development, covering the end-to-end software lifecycle, from design to deployment. Beyond that, the programme honed my soft skills through project work and presentations, helping me communicate solutions clearly and confidently with clients and stakeholders.

Ye Fan: During my first-year summer internship at SIA Engineering Company, I gained insights into how large organisations operate, learned the value of cross-department collaboration, and understood the importance of adaptability. The internship deepened my appreciation for using technology to enhance operational efficiency.

In the long run, I hope to contribute to initiatives driving digital transformation and data-driven decision-making in the aviation sector.

Ye Fan, what’s it been like serving in the SgIS Scholars’ Network Executive Committee?

As the Co-Chairperson of the 13th SgIS Scholars’ Network Executive Committee, I plan and organise events for the SgIS Scholars’ Network. It has been incredibly fulfilling to see our events come to life, from the initial planning stages to watching participants engage, learn, and form new connections. My experience with the SgIS Scholars’ Network taught me a great deal about teamwork, leadership, and the importance of fostering a sense of community.

Jessica, any tips to offer students who intend to follow a similar career path?

My advice is to cultivate a balanced skillset. Technical skills are foundational and make analysis and solutioning significantly more efficient. However, interpersonal skills will help you advance in your career. The ability to understand the needs and intentions of others — especially when they are not explicitly communicated — is invaluable!

Finally, what kind of opportunities does SgIS offer, and how can scholars make the most of them?

Jessica: SgIS provides excellent opportunities for scholars to learn and interact. The SgIS Leaders’ Forums allow us to hear from and interact with Singapore’s industry leaders as well as Ministers, broadening our perspectives. There are also SgIS network activities that are informal events to encourage networking of scholars across different companies and industries. I’ve made very good friends within the SgIS network, both inside and outside my company.

Ye Fan: The scholarship provides a unique platform for scholars to connect organically across industries, learn from inspiring leaders, and develop both technical and soft skills. Scholars should be proactive to step out of their comfort zones, embrace leadership roles, and make the most of mentorship and networking opportunities. SgIS rewards active engagement — the more you invest, the more you gain!
