In healthcare, compassion is the cornerstone of every act of healing. Nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals are the quiet pillars who ensure that every patient receives care that is not only skilled, but also human. Their dedication often defines a patient’s journey from illness to recovery, giving comfort when it is most needed.
Among them is Charlynne Geraldene Nerva, whose care has touched the lives of countless children and families. Her journey into nursing began with simple acts of care at home, but it has since evolved into a purposeful career that continues to inspire those around her. Today, as an Assistant Nurse Clinician in the paediatric ward at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), she exemplifies how compassion, skill, and leadership come together to make a difference.
Charlynne’s professional journey was made possible through the Healthcare Merit Scholarship administered by MOH Holdings (MOHH), which supports healthcare professionals in shaping the future of Singapore’s public healthcare. The scholarship recognises academic excellence and nurtures individuals who aspire to lead with empathy and commitment.
A Calling from Childhood
Charlynne’s path into nursing was shaped long before she ever wore a uniform. “Growing up, I was always surrounded by children as my mother used to babysit several of them,” she said. “I naturally took on the role of a big sister and often helped with simple caregiving tasks. This early exposure sparked my interest in caring for others.”
Her interest deepened through the stories of her older sister. “My older sister, who is a nurse, would share her work experiences with me. Listening to her stories further inspired me to pursue nursing as a vocation,” she shared.
These early influences, coupled with her innate empathy, led Charlynne to the world of paediatric nursing. “Over time, I developed a strong passion for working with children, and that naturally led me to specialise in paediatric care, where I feel I can make a meaningful impact on young ones and their families,” she enthused.
One encounter stands out vividly in Charlynne’s memory. “I will never forget a young boy I cared for who was battling a terminal illness,” she recalled. “Despite the immense difficulty he had getting out of bed, he showed an iron will to remain independent. He insisted on walking on his own and told me, with quiet determination, that he would make it back to school the following week to see his friends.”
“Witnessing a child’s unwavering determination to live despite facing profound medical adversity was both humbling and inspiring,” she reflected. “That moment deepened my passion for paediatric nursing and reinforced my commitment to this profession.”
The Pathway to Possibility
When it was time to advance her studies, Charlynne found both opportunity and encouragement through the Healthcare Merit Scholarship. “I wanted to advance my knowledge in nursing and take the next step in this profession by pursuing a nursing degree,” she recounted. “However, pursuing it came with financial challenges that I could not overcome alone.”
The scholarship became a stepping stone. “The Healthcare Merit Scholarship offered me not only financial relief but also supported my dedication to healthcare,” she shared. “It gave me the opportunity to participate in clinical placements, volunteer work, and extra training that deepened my skills and confidence.”
Most notably, the scholarship affirmed her potential. “It reinforced my belief that others see my potential, and that continues to motivate me as I grow professionally in this field,” she added.
Growing in Compassion and Confidence
Charlynne pursued a Bachelor of Nursing Practice (Honours), a course that shaped her clinical judgement and leadership skills. “Studying Nursing Practice played a crucial role in shaping me into a reflective and critical-thinking nurse,” she explained. “The course developed my ability to make informed clinical decisions, adapt to complex situations, and provide safe, effective care.”
Her overseas attachment in Manchester broadened her perspective. “It gave me invaluable insight into Western healthcare systems and practices,” she noted. “The exposure helped me build a strong foundation in evidence-based practice, which I now apply every day in my role.”
Above all, her training strengthened her personal beliefs. “My studies strengthened my commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care, ensuring that every patient I support receives care that is not only clinically appropriate, but also empathetic and person-centred,” she shared.
Heartwork in Action
Today, as an Assistant Nurse Clinician at KKH, Charlynne’s days are filled with both structure and spontaneity. “A day at the paediatric ward begins with checking essential equipment and medications to ensure we are always prepared for any emergency,” she elaborated. From morning rounds to comforting frightened toddlers, no two days are ever alike.
“What keeps me going is the incredible resilience of children,” she beamed. “Even on their toughest days, they manage to smile, laugh, and keep fighting. I am also motivated by the opportunity to make a real, tangible difference, whether that is easing a child’s discomfort, supporting a family through a difficult diagnosis, or celebrating small but significant milestones.”
Her care extends beyond patients — she also invests in developing future professionals. “I often provide on-the-spot feedback, whether after a procedure or following an interaction with a patient’s family, to help mentees reflect and grow in real time.”
Next-Level Nursing
Beyond her duties, Charlynne plays a vital role in service quality and digital transformation. As part of the team that led her ward to win Best Inpatient Ward for Service Quality 2020, she takes pride in fostering a culture of accountability and care. “We focus on improving patient and caregiver experience through timely service recovery and feedback integration,” she explained.
As a Nursing Software Suite (NURSS) Champion, she supports digital adoption at the bedside. “At KKH, each bedside is equipped with an iPad that offers caregiver education apps, realtime access to lab results, and tools for updating a child’s intake and output chart,” she observed. “Technology is only as effective as the team using it, so building nurses’ confidence and digital literacy is essential for true integration.”
For Charlynne, leadership is as much about teamwork as it is about direction. “Taking on leadership responsibilities has deepened my perspective on the vital role of teamwork in delivering safe and effective care,” she said. “I have come to appreciate that patient outcomes are not the result of individual effort alone, but of strong collaboration, clear communication, and mutual support.”
Her approach to mentoring reflects this philosophy. “I believe in creating a safe space where colleagues feel comfortable asking questions, sharing challenges, and reflecting on their practice without fear of judgment,” she emphasised.
The Power of Presence
For students aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Charlynne’s advice is both heartfelt and practical. “My advice to students who are passionate about paediatric care is simple: go for it! It is one of the most rewarding and heartwarming areas of nursing you can enter,” she encouraged. “Stay curious, stay kind, and never underestimate the value of your presence. Sometimes, just being there makes all the difference.”
She also encourages aspiring scholars to explore opportunities like the Healthcare Merit Scholarship, which offers aspiring healthcare professionals a rewarding pathway into Singapore’s public healthcare system. Beyond full sponsorship for studies, scholars gain invaluable clinical exposure through attachments and internships, as well as access to structured development programmes and mentorship. “Along the way, you will meet like-minded individuals who share a passion for healthcare, creating a strong network of peers and future colleagues,” Charlynne highlighted.
