Lieutenant Jordan Martin Miller
SAF Merit Scholarship
Master of Engineering in Aeronautical Engineering – Imperial College London
T he Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) stands ready to respond swiftly to life-saving missions and defend our skies from potential air threats. With their vision to be a First Class Air Force as a blueprint, the men and women in the RSAF combine their finely honed skills with advanced systems to keep the safety of Our Home, Above All.
It’s a challenging, exciting, and rewarding career that 28-year-old Lieutenant (LTA) Jordan Martin Miller has aspired towards since attending the RSAF Open House several years back. As an aspiring pilot with the Singapore Youth Flying Club, LTA Jordan found the fighter aircrafts in the aerial and static displays captivating, but the turning point came after some interaction with RSAF pilots and personnel.
He realised that the RSAF would give him the opportunity to marry his passions with a challenging but deeply fulfilling job. “You are surrounded by a very select and professional group of people who all committed to safeguarding the nation. No other organisation provides such an opportunity, plus the fact that you can break the sound barrier on a daily basis,” LTA Jordan shares.
What awaited him was an exciting career where he underwent both flight training as well as training in secondary appointments that gave him the opportunity to learn different responsibilities across a variety of roles. While the learning process was difficult, the dedication of instructors who spent extra time coaching LTA Jordan and his course mates helped them scale this wall and reach new heights.
A Place To Spread Your Wings
To empower the continuous development of its personnel, the RSAF offers many avenues through which personnel can choose to further their education. For LTA Jordan, being given the opportunity to further his studies overseas under the SAF Merit Scholarship is one that he is very grateful for. The skills he picked up during training have helped him to tackle his studies better, and he hopes that the concepts introduced in his current course will help him take his career with the RSAF further.
Besides the chance to take his skills to the next level, LTA Jordan also enjoys the commitment to a common purpose which is formed between the men and women of the RSAF. “There is a very strong esprit de corps that is formed between the men and women in the organisation. The whole team is driven towards a common purpose, and there is a special bond that is formed between everyone. This translates to more than just a working relationship, but to one where you feel responsible, on a personal level, to look out for your friends and colleagues,” he explains.
One of the most humbling things that LTA Jordan has learnt is the concept of service before self. “Having enlisted in the SAF, I was introduced to our core values as a young recruit. At first, they seemed very foreign to me, and I did not make much of it. However, as my training progressed, I began to assimilate these core values to my work and my life,” he recounts, talking about how the career spurred him towards a higher purpose – to defend the nation and his loved ones.
The decision to join the RSAF is one that LTA Jordan has no regrets about, and he eagerly recommends those who are thinking of joining the RSAF to make the leap. “You will be exposed to numerous events that will shape you to become a better person. With an RSAF scholarship you will be exposed to even greater responsibilities and opportunities for you to hone your abilities. No doubt a career where you will see yourself grow immensely and reach new heights you could not have imagined was possible before joining.”
