Setting Sail to a Bright Maritime Future

Established in 2004, the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) is guided by a twin mission to strengthen and promote Singapore as an International Maritime Centre (IMC) and to build a talent pipeline to support the growth of the industry. SMF partners the industry to nurture promising young talent such as MaritimeONE scholars Ng Yu Xin Sardonna and Kenneth He Zhi Jing. Both Sardonna and Kenneth are poised to drive the future transformation of the maritime sector.

What sparked your interest in the maritime industry?

Sardonna: My interest in maritime business was sparked by a one-day school exchange programme with Singapore Polytechnic (SP) during my secondary school days. Although I knew nothing about the maritime industry initially, this programme ignited my curiosity and led me to pursue a Diploma in Maritime Business at SP. Over the three years of my studies, my passion for the field grew stronger. I realised that the industry offers vast opportunities and diverse sectors to explore, solidifying my desire to pursue a career in the maritime sector.

Kenneth: My fascination with the interconnected and international nature of the maritime industry sparked my interest. Recognising its crucial role in global trade and its impact on the Singapore economy, I decided to explore the field further by taking a shipping-related law module to learn about the industry.

Fascinating! Tell us more about what led you to apply for your scholarships. How has it benefited you so far?

Sardonna: I came across the Bernhard Schulte – MaritimeONE Scholarship while searching for scholarships. Learning about the company’s expansive business structure, and the abundant growth opportunities it offered caught my attention. Moreover, its inclusive and positive working environment further convinced me to apply for this scholarship.

Beyond financial support, the scholarship has enabled me to connect and interact with many like-minded individuals and industry veterans. They share their experiences and provide invaluable advice, which is crucial for someone like me who is about to step into the workforce.

Bernhard Schulte also offers multiple internship opportunities across their wide range of departments. These internships allowed me to familiarise myself with the company’s operations and management. Additionally, the mentorship and guidance I received during my past internship with the company have been instrumental in shaping my career goals and aspirations in the maritime industry.

Kenneth: I applied for the MaritimeONE Scholarship due to my interest in the maritime industry and saw it as an opportunity to further this interest. I felt that the MaritimeONE Scholarship could provide me with not only financial support, but also with networking events and mentorship that would allow me to get to understand the industry at a deeper level.

The MaritimeONE Scholarship has allowed me to connect with more people in the maritime industry and through these various conversations, I received valuable guidance from industry professionals and formed meaningful connections.

That must have been very helpful! Sardonna, what aspects of your current course do you find most rewarding?

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Maritime Studies is a four-year programme at NTU, primarily focusing on shipping business and management. The curriculum includes marine insurance, shipping and the environment, shipping economics, maritime law, maritime technology, ship chartering, and many other interesting courses.

Throughout my university experience, I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with diverse individuals. Working in teams has enabled me to leverage my strengths while also addressing areas for improvement.

What I find most rewarding is overcoming the challenges presented by mathematics modules. Since graduating from secondary school, I had not studied mathematics until my first year at university, making those modules particularly challenging. However, with support from my professors and friends, I persevered and eventually found them less challenging and, even enjoyable.

That’s truly admirable! What advice would you like to impart to students interested in applying for the MaritimeONE Scholarship?
