Joshua Lim is a Cybersecurity Researcher at the Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies. He is a recipient of the Public Service Commission Scholarship (Engineering) – Defence & Security and holds a Master of Engineering in Electronic and Information Engineering from Imperial College London in the United Kingdom.
As our reliance on technology grows, so must our ability to protect against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats. At CSIT, a technical agency in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Joshua works alongside some of the best cybersecurity experts. He develops deep technical expertise and harnesses cutting-edge digital technologies to meet Singapore’s security needs.
Igniting New Passions
Joshua’s interest in the digital domain started early in life and deepened during his first internship at CSIT, where a mentor guided him through a challenging project. “He not only guided me through a challenging project but also gave me calibrated ‘side quests’ that allowed me to explore a broader range of cybersecurity work,” he shared. This experience inspired Joshua to seek a career at CSIT, where he now plays a crucial role in ensuring national security.
“The PSC Scholarship (Engineering) has given me the opportunity to study at Imperial College, earn valuable insights from experts, and connect with like-minded peers,” Joshua said. “Furthermore, I was able to gain practical experience and build networks with my future colleagues through a summer internship at CSIT.”
Charting New Horizons
Joshua currently holds the position of Cybersecurity Researcher at CSIT, where he conducts deep research into software and applications to ascertain the robustness of their features and develops tools to enhance Singapore’s digital security. His role is intellectually stimulating and fulfilling.
“Cybersecurity research is like solving a jigsaw puzzle. Often, the pieces don’t seem to line up or make sense, and it is frustrating. However, the satisfaction of a breakthrough is one of the best feelings out there!” he said. “Working in a team of highly knowledgeable and dedicated professionals is also inspiring as we discuss problems that stump us, and bounce ideas off each other.”
Joshua aims to continue deepening his technical skills in cybersecurity and eventually transition into a management position to make an even greater impact. He values the foundational technical knowledge provided by CSIT and hopes to contribute to shaping national-level cybersecurity policies and ensuring robust protection for Singapore’s digital infrastructure.
CSIT has a strong emphasis on learning, offering ample opportunities for technical, personal and professional development.
“CSIT also provides us with leadership development programmes and encourages us to develop a wide range of interests in parallel technologies. This holistic approach ensures that we are well-rounded and equipped with the skills needed to excel in our careers.”
Joshua’s advice to those aspiring to take on a meaningful career in technology is to have an unflagging willingness to learn.
“Don’t be discouraged even if things seem too complex and nothing makes sense at the start. The learning curve for the cybersecurity field is shaped like a logarithmic function, very steep at the start but it gets gentler soon. Also, the best way to learn is by working with technical experts who are equally passionate about technology,” he advised.
