While reflecting on some of the key events of 2022, one story that stood out to me as an avid sports fan, was Lionel Messi’s triumph with Argentina at the World Cup last December. Messi’s journey to lifting football’s most coveted trophy wasn’t always easy- it was a journey riddled with challenges, obstacles and heartbreaks. Yet, he didn’t give up on chasing his dream of winning an international trophy for his nation.
As many may be familiar with Messi’s story, he was first diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency at a young age. While his undeniable talent was recognised, he was shunned by clubs due to his medical condition. After being met with rejections, he was eventually signed by Spanish giants FC Barcelona. Messi went on to mesmerise and captivate fans from all around the world with his footballing ability, breaking individual records along the way and winning every possible trophy at club level.
Despite these accomplishments, the dream of winning with Argentina continued to elude him in his illustrious career. Having reached the finals of three major international tournaments, Argentina failed to win on these occasions. Messi’s disappointment was so great that at one point, he briefly retired from international football. However, his strong desire and determination saw him rising again to eventually lead and inspire his nation to winning the World Cup in Qatar last year.
Messi’s story of perseverance mirrors that of our scholars in this issue who were determined to take bold steps to follow their passion and succeed no matter how uncertain the road ahead seemed. As you read their stories, I hope it inspires you to never give up chasing your dreams until they become a reality.
