Tell us more about cybersecurity. What interests you about it?

Cybersecurity is a dynamic and fast-paced field as new cyber threats are constantly emerging in the digitalised world. In CSIT, our cybersecurity work is even more challenging, as we confront sophisticated, advanced persistent threats targeting Singapore’s critical systems. We challenge ourselves to identify vulnerabilities in some of the latest systems and develop effective measures to prevent exploitation by very sophisticated threat actors.

That sounds exciting! What appealed to you most about the CSIT Undergraduate Scholarship?

It was a combination of knowing that I can grow with some of the best cybersecurity experts in Singapore and apply my expertise for a meaningful cause, and the fact that work at CSIT is technical in nature – something I liked. I also knew that I would be allowed to keep improving myself in the fast-paced world of digital technology through this scholarship.

Speaking of the scholarship, how did it support your academic experience?

I will not trivialise the importance of monetary support provided to scholars. This includes monthly allowances, tuition fees, overseas exchange, professional courses and certification allowances and more. CSIT also organises events to facilitate interaction and bonding between fellow scholars as well as with CSIT staff. We are also assigned a mentor, who is a CSIT engineer, to provide us with valuable guidance throughout our studies.

I also think the internship with CSIT was a very important milestone. I was exposed to very interesting cybersecurity challenges and innovative solutions that influenced the choice of modules that I took during my studies to help prepare me for my current role as a cybersecurity engineer. These things are important as we felt like we were part of the CSIT family even before we started work.

“While CSIT’s products are not for mass adoption and therefore do not receive public accolades, the knowledge that my contributions played a critical role in safeguarding Singapore’s digital space serves as a strong motivation for me.” Mong Zheng Wei

On the topic of your role in CSIT, can you tell us more about your responsibilities as a Cybersecurity Engineer?

My role demands a constant pursuit of knowledge and staying up to date with the latest advancements in mobile systems. This entails anticipating and closely monitoring the evolving landscape of technology and threats. It is crucial that we have the know-how to proactively identify vulnerabilities, and swiftly implement necessary measures to thwart any potential exploits by malicious actors. The key is staying ahead.

What do you find most fulfilling about your work?

What I find most meaningful about my work is the opportunity to contribute to protecting Singapore’s security and ensuring the safety of my loved ones. Supporting CSIT’s missions in cyber defence, counter-terrorism, and counter hostile information operations, I am able to make a significant impact. While CSIT’s products are not for mass adoption and therefore do not receive public accolades, the knowledge that my contributions played a critical role in safeguarding Singapore’s digital space serves as a strong motivation for me.

A worthy cause Indeed! What would you say has been your greatest achievement so far?

The successful identification of a serious vulnerability when I was relatively new in my job. We subsequently resolved the issue and implemented new features to enhance our products. Looking back, this was only possible due to the space and autonomy given for me to thrive at the onset of my career. This demonstrated the high level of trust that CSIT places in its employees and served as a motivating catalyst for my personal and professional growth.

Can you describe the work culture at CSIT?

The work at CSIT can be challenging, but very rewarding. I am also grateful to have wonderful colleagues who are supportive, helpful, and friendly. This makes me look forward to going to work on most days. Most importantly, we are a closely knit agency that believes in innovation and leaders provide the safety net for trying.
