Engineers to Clinicians

The practice of medicine is fast changing. The future of medicine will no longer be just about the application of science. We see technology playing a significant role and impacting treatment that is given to patients. The Engineering and Medicine track offered by National University of Singapore (NUS) Faculty of Engineering and Duke-NUS Medical School prepares students with a background in engineering for leadership roles in healthcare as clinicians who can both treat patients and harness technological advancements to bring about innovations that impact medicine. Successful students will graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree at NUS followed by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Duke-NUS Medical School.

I have always had interests in various fields, such as product design and the human anatomy, and often wondered if I could integrate them in my future aspirations. The NUS Engineering and Medicine track has certainly made that possible. Through its rigorous curriculum, including the Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) and the Duke-NUS Pre-Med Module (GMS1000), I will be equipped with both the technical skills and clinical knowledge I require to be an innovative and patient-centric doctor-engineer. I look forward to graduating and applying what I have learnt to make a positive difference in the healthcare sector.

The NUS Engineering and Medicine track interweaves the disciplines of medicine, engineering and innovation, which gave me the opportunity to collaborate with healthcare professionals and the engineering faculty to conceptualise, design, test, and develop healthcare technologies. Through the various workshops, programmes and events organised for students, I gained continuous exposure to the medical field in Singapore, preparing us well for medical school and ultimately as a clinician.
