Undergrad Scholarships

A*STAR awards scholarships to bright students with a keen interest and passion for science and research to pursue their undergraduate studies at globally renowned universities.

Nurturing young, talented individuals is a key cornerstone for A*STAR because these bright individuals form the future generation of scientists and scientific leaders. We are committed to providing them with opportunities for education at the finest local and overseas universities, gaining first-hand research experience at A*STAR and universities, and learning from the best scientific minds that are dedicated to mentoring young budding scientists.

For Singaporeans/other nationals intending to take up Singapore citizenship:

A*STAR Graduate Scholarship (PhD) (2013-2014)

Introduction
The A*STAR Graduate Scholarship supports PhD studies at top global partner universities and world-class research institutes in Singapore and overseas, providing opportunities for excellent PhD research training. The AGS is tenable at the following partner universities. For more information on eligibility, award details and application procedures, you can click on the links to the respective partner universities:

Nanyang Technological University
Carnegie Mellon University
Imperial College London
Karolinska Institutet
University of Cambridge
University of Dundee
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Oxford

Eligibility

  • Must have obtained at least a 2nd Upper Class Honours Degree or equivalent in relevant dicisplines.
  • Good 'O' and 'A' level track records/Polytechnic students who obtained a Diploma with Merit will also be considered.
  • Applicants must satisfy criteria for and seek admission into NTU or NUS PhD programme .
  • Singaporeans and other nationals intending to take up Singapore citizenship.
  • Strong interest in a research career .

Applicants may submit GRE scores (if available) to be included in the overall assessment of their scholarsip application.
AGS scholarship tenable at NTU/NUS will not be required to do a one year research attachment at A*STAR. They can proceed immediately for their PhD.

Coverage
Support for up to 4 years of PhD studies. Award includes:
 

  • Full tuition fees
  • Monthly sustenance allowance
  • Book, computer, annual conference and thesis allowance
  • Support for overseas attachment
     
Scholars at an overseas university will also receive:
  • Overseas allowance
  • Annual return airfare

Scholars at NTU/NUS will also receive support for:
  • Up to 1 year of overseas attachment (if applicable)
  • 2 years of overseas post-doctoral training

*All rates/allowances are subject to adjustments made by A*STAR from time to time

Service Commitment

Scholars at NTU/NUS
  • Singaporeans (at the point of award): No service commitment
  • Non-Singaporeans (at the point of award): 2-year service in Singaporebased companies^ without commitment to any specific organization. The area of work should preferably be in Biomedical Sciences, PhysicalSciences or Engineering.
  • AGS (NTU/NUS) scholars who are subsequently awarded the AGS(PDF) for overseas post-doctoral training : 1 year

^Singapore-based companies refer to local companies and international companies that have a base in Singapore and which is registered with the Accounting & Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA).

Scholars at overseas univerisities

Upon completion of their studies, candidates will return to contribute to A*STAR's RIs for a service commitment period of three years.
