In the Lab of Life

STEM careers are growing at a furious pace, yet women make up just 35% of this workforce. According to a recent report in The Straits Times, fewer than a third of women believe equal prospects exist in the field. The gap is real, but so is the progress being made by women who refuse to let it define them.

In this issue, our cover story celebrates three remarkable women scholars in STEM. Their stories reveal what courage and resilience truly look like — from finding the patience to push through relentless challenges, to leading with confidence when they’re the only woman in the room, and embracing the discomfort of being a perpetual beginner in a field that never stops evolving. Their journeys remind us that courage is built one brave choice at a time.

We also hear from scholars across disciplines who have faced defining setbacks, from injuries to failures and dreams that took unexpected turns. Along the way, they discovered that obstacles often become the very places where we learn what we’re truly capable of.

If you're navigating scholarship applications and feeling overwhelmed, this section is for you. We gathered real questions from our Reddit community—the ones that keep you up at night—and asked our Manager of Strategic Partnerships for straightforward answers that will help you move forward with confidence.

Whether you're drawn to STEM or charting an entirely different path, these scholar stories remind us that the future isn't shaped by those who have it all figured out. It’s shaped by those brave enough to begin, bold enough to experiment and learn, and resilient enough to stay the course.

Happy reading!
